Passing of Ambassador Tony de Brum
It is with great sorrow that the Pacific Islands Development Forum have learnt of the passing of a close and very dear friend, the Republic of Marshall Islands Climate Ambassador Tony de Brum.
For PIDF, Ambassador de Brum was there from the genesis, he was instrumental in the formulation of the Charter, the Suva Declaration on Climate Change and a champion of the Paris agreement.
He was a man who proudly call himself a person from a large ocean state who advocates on climate policies, fighting for the survival of his nation. He was a fearless voice who wouldn’t let the ‘big brothers’ bully and dictate to him how things ought to be done.
The Pacific have lost a great leader, a ‘giant of history’ and his legacy will live on and become an inspiration to the next generations of climate warriors.
The Pacific Islands Development Forum mourns with the Government and People of the Marshall Islands and members of the late Ambassador’s family. He will be fondly remembered by all those who had the privilege of working with him.
