Chey Scovell holds a degree in International Business and Asian Studies (Economics, Political Sc.) from Griffith University and Graduate Diplomas in Export Management and Government (Finance and Management).
Having focused his tertiary study and professional interest on Asia and the Pacific he believes sustainable and inclusive economic growth for PNG will come through increased focus on value-adding of our renewable resources, tourism and eventually R&D.
Chey has been the CEO of the Manufacturers Council of PNG since 2007, in this time he has been instrumental in building cooperative working relationships with key public service agencies, donors and other industry sectors. He was a lead contributor to the development of the Vision 2050, Long Term Development Strategy and MTDS, and has represented PNG at APEC, WTO and other international forums.
In 2011 Chey was appointed by cabinet as one of two private sector trade advisors to the State, with a directive to address outstanding issues relating to WTO, iEPA, PACER+, USMFT and the creation of a Trade Commission.
On behalf of industry Chey holds a number of government and PPD positions such as Deputy Chairman of the National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology and Director or Member of a number of sector based committees for labour and employment regulation, customs, trade and commerce, infrastructure, TVET , National Population Council, and special projects / reforms and is currently an industry advisor to the Minister for National Planning and Monitoring and Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry.In addition to the manufacturing and downstream processing sector Chey has a wide knowledge and network across many sectors in PNG, and is often an early port of call for assistance and information for investors, donors and foreign missions.
Chey is involved in sports having served as President of the National Basketball Federation, Director Surfing Association of PNG. He is an Honorary Director of the PNG Informal Sector Youth Association and founder of Sapience PNG Ltd and Four Flavours Entertainment entities which seek to assist youth; sustainable social and economic development; and promote the creative talents of South Pacific Artists.
