Symposium: SDG 14 Pacific Commitments- 2018 Action Agenda
As part of PIDFs Pacific Year of the Ocean, the Secretariat coordinated the” Symposium on SDG 14 Pacific Commitments – 2018 Action Agenda” in Suva in December 2017 , under the patronage of Ambassador Peter Thomson, the United Nations Secretary General’s (UNSG’s) Special Envoy for the Ocean.
The high-level United Nations Conference on SDG 14 held in New York from 5 to 9 June 2017 adopted a “Call for Action”, a co-chairs’ summaries of the partnership dialogues, as well as a list of voluntary commitments on Goal 14.
Following the Conference and COP23 Ambassador Peter Thomson of Fiji the UN Special Envoy for the Ocean requested the PIDF’s support in organising a regional symposium to ensure the outcomes and the voluntary commitments are implemented and to present and promote participation in the nine thematic multi-stakeholders Communities for Ocean Actions platforms.
An in-depth analysis of the Ocean Conference Voluntary Commitments to support and monitor their implementation which was prepared by the Division for Sustainable Development, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations was made available to the PIDF for the regional symposium.
The half day PIDF symposium attended by public sector, private sector and civil society groups reviewed the Call for Action voluntary commitments globally and for the Pacific, and discussed regional activities to be taken up in 2018 in pursuit of SDG14 implementation in the Pacific.
An action plan will be developed from this Symposium to guide activities for 2018.
