The Spanish Balearic Island of Mallorca hosted the second Smart Island World Congress from 23 -24 April, 2018, which has become the leading global event on smart islands offering islands a space for debate where they can jointly face the challenges of the future in the field of technology, innovation and domestic resources.

The Congress brought together participants from various islands from around the world. Palau and the Marshall Islands were represented. The Pacific Islands Development Forum was represented by the Team Leader Programme Management Mark Borg.  He presented on sustainable maritime transport on behalf of the USP/RMI Micronesia Centre for Sustainable Transport’s Dr Peter Nuttall.

The session was organised by the Global Islands Partnership (GLISPA), of which PIDF is a member. The session explored innovations that were becoming available for small islands and potential collaboration between organisations and different islands in order to achieve sustainable development on these islands.
